Menorca Tourism Guide - Ciutadella & Menorca Diving

There is a history of shoe making on this west side of Menorca around Ciutadella. Ciutadella itself has a bustling port, and boats come in from Alcudia on Majorca to this hotspot in the West, which used to be the capital of Menorca. Cuitadella is a popular and most attractive spot on Menorca, and you'll discover an array of historic buildings here including a large cathedral, parts of which date back to the 1300s, with the usual neo-gothic add ons!

There are a couple of very good museums in Ciutadella as well including the Musea Diocesa de Menorca where you can really get your teeth into talayotic history with human skulls and various artefacts on display. The Museu Municipal de Ciutadella is where to head to find out more about the history of Ciutadella, a port base and a hive of activity for many centuries. Many all day tourist boat trips run from the port at Ciutadella as well! Ciutadella is also known for it's distinct windmill, Torre de Sant Nicolau which sits on the cliffs and the western end of the city.

Ciutadella Churches & Historic Buildings Menorca

If you're bag is architecture spotting then Ciutadella won't disappoint. There are two big squares here which sit side by side, Placa de s'Esplanada or Placa des Pins which is a great shady spot adorned with pine trees, lots of seating spots and plenty of cafes and space for kids to stretch their legs. You'll find the elaborate town hall on this square. It's open to the public for checking out the gothic council chamber! The other is Placa d'es Born which is home to an obelisk memoral to those killed in a Turkish attack in 1558, and a superb theatre which also doubles up as a cinema showing a great choice of independent and mainstream film.

Teatre d'es born is well worth a look. Check their web link to the right for current showings, both film and theatre. Head also for the church of Sant Francesc built mostly at the end of the 16th century. Oh dear though, the old monastery you'll find underneath the post office.

Catedral de Menorca, Placa de la Catedral. Tel: 971 38 07 39, open from 8.30am-1pm and 6-9pm every day and admission is free.

Watersports Menorca

Menorca has become known as the 'Caribbean of the Med', for a key reason - the beautiful clear sea waters which surround the island and make perfect scuba diving conditions. Numerous scuba diving companies opperate out of the key harbour bases of Mao, Ciutadella and Fornells, catering for all from beginners to the more experienced.

Check out Seven Fathoms Dive Centre in Ciutadella, web link to the right. They have many dive sites including the popular Slipway in a sheltered bay of about 6m. Lots of Octopus spotting in this dive. Other dive spots include Pont den Gil which is a renowned cavern dive of about 200m. Seven Fathoms key training ground is off the popular south west resort of Cala en Blanes. Beginners start here and what treats out to sea in the bay from what on lands is a fairly ordinary looking Menorca resort. The sheltered bay, though, off Cala en Blanes has a rocky reef perfect for divers.
