Menorca Tourism Guide - Fornells Menorca North

Find yourself in Fornells and the Bay of Fornells and you might think you're in the Caribbean! Truly stunning is Fornells. The most fascinating thing about all the Balearic Islands is the diversity within islands. Menorca is no different, and as you move towards the North of the island the flavour changes. Get ready for dramatic rugged coastlines, nature reserves playing host to migratory and indigenous birds, small idyllic fishing villages with real character, some of the best scuba diving sites in the Med and the traditional Menorca food is heaven.

Fornells Menorca is a particularly popular and pretty unspoilt fishing village in the North of Menorca, offering an array of water sports including windsurfing and scuba diving. Fornells has a superb choice of seafood restaurants! There's ample opportunity to take lessons in water sports such as sailing and windsurfing, and the walking up from Fornells along the coast to Cap de Cavalleria is, well, magical and dramatic indeed.

Facts about Fornells Menorca

Do you like fish, especially lobster. Yes, well Fornells is most certainly for you. Try out one of the many seafood restaurants along the waterfront at Fornells. This small and idyllic fishing village has become rather famous for it's seafood restaurants. Apparently King Carlos sails into Fornells bay occasionally to partake! One of the famous dishes is Caldereta de Ilagosta, meaning spiny lobster stew, delicious! There's a choice of fresh fish in most of the restaurants located on Fornells waterfront, as well as the usual paella and caldereta. Fornells really is one of the most attractive villages on Menorca so take time to wander around, taking in the white painted buildings.

Further afield up the coast towards Cap Cavalleria it gets quite isolated and wild. Good news for adventurous walkers. There's an eco-museum up here as well situated in the Roman village of Sanitja. It's beautiful scenery around here and beaches have a red brown sand are completely unspoilt.

Move across the northern top of the island and you'll discover some more completely untouched beaches. Check out the ruined Moorish fortress of Castell de Sant Agueda near Cala en Pilar (which does have a little beach). Move on to two very attractive little beach bays, Cala d'Algairens and Cala Morell. Cala Morell is also known for it's fascinating prehistoric necropolis consisting of 15 caves which have been dug out in the rock.

Arenal d'en Castell

Arenal d'en Castell in Menorca is a particularly popular family resort with a quiet and relaxed edge that has proved rather popular with British families. The bay and beach at Arenal d'en Castell is an idyllic horse shoe shape and sea waters are warm and shallow, which is great for families with younger children. Keep an eye on the flag system in operation here with the usual green safe, yellow be careful and red absolutely no swimming. It's the beach at Arenal d'en Castell in Menorca which is the key attraction with it's beautiful white fine sand. Also this resort is renowned for it's array of water sports.

Like many resorts along the south coast of Menorca, Arenal d'en Castell is also surround by the renowned cliffs, so you'll probably end up with accommodation with spectacular views across the bay! With the cliffs come the stairs down to this Menorca beach, and up, so if you do have any mobility issues or very young children it's worth bearing this in mind, and checking what amenities are based in your accommodation to compensate for less trips up and down to the beach. There are ample supermarkets in Arenal d'en Castell, and a selection of souvenier and nic nack shops. There's also a relatively new commercial development called Coves Noves Centre, conveniently placed just a few minutes walk from the beach.

Looking now inland from the resort, the spiritual centre and highest point of the island Mount Toro, is clearly visible on most days, along with the 17th Century Sanctuary of the Mare de Deu del Toro.
