Specialist Holiday Menorca Mao Port

The port of Mao has a fascinating history, well worth dipping into before you arrive if you arrive on Menorca through Mao rather than the west Ciutadella. The port itself is more than six kilometres in length, it has a long history and has been used as a port since 300 BC. The harbour here is naturally carved, and its natural shape is key to it's success as a base for successive fleets of warships. The likes of the Phoenicians, Greeks, Rhodians, Fhocians and the Carthaginians have all left their mark in Maó® •ntil 1802 Menorca had also been an English and a French colony. This port of Mao is often known as the pearl of the Mediterranean.

A significant feature of Mao port is that there are two islands in the centre, Illa del Rei, with its 18th century buildings, used as a military hospital until a few decades ago and Illa del Llatzaret or La Quarentena, with its medical institution built in 1793. Move to the south of the mouth of the port, and you'll discover the ruins of a fort, Fort de Sant Felip, designed as a defence against the Turks. This is a busy port, operating 24 hours a day, with a selection of scheduled passenger sailing services, tourist cruisers, merchant traffic and pleasure boats pouring in.
