Menorca has become known as the 'Caribbean of the Med', for a key reason - the beautiful clear sea waters which surround the island and make perfect scuba diving conditions. Numerous scuba diving companies opperate out of the key harbour bases of Mao, Ciutadella and Fornells, catering for all from beginners to the more experienced.
Check out Seven Fathoms Dive Centre in Ciutadella, web link to the right. They have many dive sites including the popular Slipway in a sheltered bay of about 6m. Lots of Octopus spotting in this dive. Other dive spots include Pont den Gil which is a renowned cavern dive of about 200m. Seven Fathoms key training ground is off the popular south west resort of Cala en Blanes. Beginners start here and what treats out to sea in the bay from what on lands is a fairly ordinary looking Menorca resort. The sheltered bay, though, off Cala en Blanes has a rocky reef perfect for divers.
Other diving companies like Ulmo operate on the east side of the island, off Es Mercadal. Many scuba diving companies like Ulmo offer try dives, which really are a great introduction if you're not quite sure you'll like it. Ulmo have about 60 sites in their range out from the beautiful East Coast port of Addaia. The north coast of Menorca is beautiful diving territory, rugged and uneven, with lots of vertical drop offs, coral encrusted reefs, caves and caverns. Expect to see plenty of marine life, and in these crystal clear waters off this coast, with 30m of visability say Ulmo, you really do see all. Check their web link for prices.
Check out also S'Algar Diving on the South East Coast, handy if you're based in Mao. They do lots of other watersports activities as well including bananna boat rides and paragliding.
Horse riding is pretty important here on Menorca, and there is a special breed of Menorca horse, usually a black horse but not always, and tall thin and elegant. They are most impressive and beautiful animals, and are broken in carefully in Menorca. They're renowned for their ability to walk on their back legs - something they're usually seen doing at festival time. There's plenty of opportunity to see them.
Check out the Club Escola Menorquina. (Show Menorca web link to the right). They run two shows per week and are based in the centre of Menorca. Joan Pons Marti is the man who started the club back in the 1940s. He was rather progressive as well, promoting festivals for all, and helping his fiancee Consuelo Marques Melia to take part in the Sant Bartomeu festivals. No woman had ever led the famous Menorcan horse out in Menorca's festivals, but Joan Pons Marti and Consuelo Marques Melia put a stop to all that rubbish!
Check out Stables Farm just inland from Cala'n Porter. They offer a great selection of horse rides, for novices and the experienced. They're perfect for family and group rides as well, accompanied by guides Lucy and Toyo, and they take you off the beaten track, they don't ride alongside roads, passing ancient watchtowers and charming farmhouses. They do a medium length ride which takes you a little further onto the Calas Covas track cutting through a small wooded area on the way back, or try the ride to Calas Covas beach, which is best done in the beginning of the year when the wild flowers and herbs are in full bloom. It's magical way to see some of the hidden rural areas of Menorca. Check Stables Farm's web link to the right for details.
