The western interior, inland from Ciutadella in Menorca, is renowned for quite a few pre-historic sites, so push inland to see some of these fascinating sites.
The biggest of these prehistoric monuments is Son Catlar which you'll discover on the way to Son Saura.
Son Catlar is a must see on any visit to Menorca. This prehistoric town settlement is the largest on Menorca, with origins in the Bronze Age. It is thought to have expanded a short time before the Roman conquest of Minorca, in the 3rd-2nd centuries BC. At this point, it's suggested, the great walls you can see encircling this site were reinforced with a series of rectangular towers.
The urban nucleus of this settlement is thought to have been inhabited until the last times of the Roman Empire. It is one of the biggest sanctuaries in prehistoric Minorca, and the settlement consists of great Taulas, many towers, a talayotic house, sentry boxes and a burial cave, where the dead were incinerated in lime.
