Mallorca North & West Tourism Guide - The Formentor Peninsula

Mallorca's Formentor Peninsula is much visited by holidaymakers in Majorca, and is perhaps Majorca's best example of dramatic effect caused by mountains meeting the sea. This stunning part of Northern Mallorca at the northern end of the Serra de Tramuntana ia essentially a long headland of 12 miles. Scenery is indeed mind-bogglingly spectacular, with steep cliffs which reach 400 metres in some places. You can take a little footpath up to the Cap de Formentor from the road which goes to Mirador des Colomer. This really is a must do if you're in this part of Majorca.

Once at the top, panoramic views are to be had out to sea and of the El Colomer rock. This Peninsula has long been featured in the work of poets and artists. The trip is best taken either early morning, or late afternoon to avoid crowds. There's a very attractive lighthouse as well on the Cap de Formentor.

Formentor Mallorca History

The whole Formentor Peninsula was bought up in 1928 by Adam Diehl, an Argentine art-lover and playboy. In 1929 he built and opened the modernist styled Formentor Hotel, which is still there and thriving on the peninsula. The hotel began to attract quite a few celebrities such as the likes of, first of all, the Duke of Windsor, and writer Ramon Gomez de la Serna. Stars like Ava Gardner, Gary Cooper, Laurence Olivier and Audrey Hepburn followed.

This luxury historic Majorca hotel really is the only place to stay on the tip of the Peninsula, although basing yourself in Pollenca is as good. The hotel has an idyllic little beach near it called Platja de Formentor, open to the public. Development in this area has, fortunately, been inhibited by consequtive owners of the hotel refusing development around it. This has been beneficial in more ways than one, not to mention the preservation of wildlife and birds in the area.

The beautiful Formentor Peninsula area of North Mallorca is birdwatching 'twitcher' heaven. Expect to see a few honey buzzards, black kites, booted eagles and famous Mallorcan bird of pray - the Eleanora's falcon. Other wildlife thriving on these rocky outcrops include swifts, martins, and lizards.
