Mallorca North & West Tourism Guide - Majorca Wine Regions

Mallorca wine regions and Majorca vineyards can be found in central Majorca. As well as the superb Sunday morning market in Santa Maria del Cami selling everything from cloths, fresh fruit and vege, cheese and sausages there is also the delectable Bodega de Macia Batle, a centre of wine making (check their web link to the right. You can have a tour plus there's a shop to purchase some of their renowned wine, some of which has won awards recently!) Moving southwards slightly to Santa Eugenia you'll discover a nature park, home to deer, Ilama, birds and butterflies.

For the centre of Majorca's wine industry you'll have to head for Binissalem, to the west of Inca. It was the Roman's that really kicked off wine making in Majorca, passing on skills of cultivating vineyards. In the 1st century BC, Balearic Island wines were being commended and compared with the best Italian wines. The Mallorcan wine industry has certainly been through it, getting hammered by cheap imported Spanish wines, which are often billed as Majorcan! In recent years though the island is establishing a real reputation for supreme quality wines. There are two very distinct vine-growing areas in Majorca. One in the centre around the districts of Binissalem, Consell, Santa Maria, Sencelles and Santa Eugenia, producing from 111 to 141 wines which are smooth on the palate and of excellent quality. Then there is the eastern Majorca area, comprising the municipal districts of Felanitx, Porreres and Manacor, producing from 101 to 131 wines.

Binissalem Wines Central Mallorca

The Binissalem Mallorca wine region is situated in the centre of Majorca and consists of the municipalities of Santa Maria del Camí, Binissalem, Sencelles, Consell and Santa Eugénia. Perhaps one of the best known wine producers on Majorca is Bodega de Jose Luis Ferrer, situated on the southern tip of Binissalem. You can visit this vineyard, and many more in the region. Most have shops where you can purchase these superb wines.

The Tramuntana or Alfabia mountain ranges protect the district from the cold northerly winds, creating a benign microclimate. The climate can be classified as a mild Mediterranean one, with hot, dry summers and short winters. The annual mean rainfall is around 450 mm. The land consists of quaternary continental sediments, rich in calcic materials, resulting in a grey-brown or grey-brown-limey soil which occasionally presents a limey crust on the surface. The relief is smooth. The vineyards are located from 75 to 200 metres above sea level.

The Binissalem district offers a wide range of excellent quality wines, young reds and crianzas, whites, and rose sparkling and muscat type wines. Their characteristics are different from the rest of the world's wines and production is very limited. The indigenous varieties of Manto Negro, Callet and Moll or Prensal Blanc, have produced wines to satisfy anyone who enjoys a good wine and also to complement many of the rich and varied dishes in Mediterranean cooking.
