Bay of Palma Tourism Guide - Nightlife & Eating Out

Palma de Mallorca has a lively nightlife scene, offering a choice of Majorca clubs, bars, restaurants and cafe bars. Palma nightlife buzzes all year round, and there are specific areas in Palma where most bars and pubs are crammed, notably Sa Llotja. These tend to wind down about 2pm, but late night drinking and dancing goes on in the Passeig Maritim where discobares or discotecas stay open till 5 or 6am.

Number one thing to do when you arrive in Palma is pick up a copy of the fortnightly listing of theatre, cinema, events, and cultural chit chat called Youthing. Essential for identifying what's going on in the cultural scene in Palma. Find Youthing in bars, cafes, trendy clothes shops and around the University campus if you happen to be about there!

Palma Sa Llotja Nightlife

The Sa Llotja area of Palma, particularly on C/Apuntadors, is crammed with bars and clubs offering live music from flamenco to jazz to blues. Many stay open until 3pm or 4pm, although officially 2pm is wind-down time. This area is popular with locals and tourists alike and you'll find plenty of 'English bars palma de majorca' style, or more specifically Irish pubs.

Abaco is rather decorative on C/Sant Joan, open from 9pm to 2.30am daily. This club serves giant cocktails at expensive prices, has flowers cascading everywhere and birds in cages, fountains, classical music and lots of waiters. Watch out for the tourist groups descending here!

Cafe Barcelona on C/Apuntadores 5 is one of the best spots for live flamenco and Latin dance music every night from 10.30pm. For jazz and blues check out Blues Ville on C/Ma de Moro 3 from 10.30pm-4am daily. Music starts and midnight. For Irish bars check out O'Briens on C/Sant Joan 7, open from 6pm to 1am Mon-Sat.

Pacha, Address: 42, Paseo Maritimo, Palma de Mallorca, Spain, Tel: +34 97145 5908 or +34 971 73 77 88, in the heart of the Paseo Maritimo, Palma's pulsing bar and cafe district!

Palma Nightlife, Passeig Maritim

Enter the late night zone in Palma de Majorca! Passeig Maritim, a little further out to the west from the centre of Palma. Regular haunt of both locals and tourists. Entertainment in this area of Palma goes on till the early hours. You can split Palma's nightlife thematically, with a bit of a gay scene to the west of Passeig Maritim, and to it's east a grunge/indie scene with sex shops and topless bars. For pre-club stop off choose the Crazy Cow, Passeig Maritim 33, open from 4pm-9am Tues-Sun. This bar has a charming terraza and plays delightful house music and Spanish chart songs. If Latin is your bag choose Made in Brasil, Passeig Maritim 27, open 8pm-3.45am, Mon-thurs, Sun 8pm-4pm. Apart from Pachas, do be aware that most of the clubs in this area play Spanish pop music which is a little tame, still worth a sample!!

Pascha Mallorca is changing to Abraxas (checkout the webguide right for developments). Expect a few top name DJs here, in the summer especially, including Tonic and Helter Skelter! The club is located in the heart of the buzzing Paseo Maritima in Mallorca's capital. Great layout and decor, with two large dancefloors, a number of bars and a cafe and a beautiful terraza. Pacha is set into a cliff-side, so expect great views from the terraza of Palma bay and harbour.

Partial to a bit of alternative rock? Check out the scene in Santa Catalina then and haunts like Mombatti on C/Sant Magin 32, open 11am-4am Tues-Sat, or Rimanblu, C/Fabrica 21, open from 4pm-3am. There's also a couple of clubs down C/Inustria.

Palma Gay Scene

There is a website with bits and bats on the gay scene in Palma, listing events, announcements and good venues, etc. Unfortunately it's only in Spanish, but you can get a few links through the website to gay bars and saunas. The website evolved out of an existing gay friendly cafe called Ben amics on C/Imprementa 1E. The gay scene then, unfortunately, not quite yet pulsing in Palma de Majorca, but coming along nicely.

Most of the gay bars and jaunts are located below the Castell de Bellver, towards the west end of Avda. Joan Miro. Check out out La Tasca, no 41, Marcus Pub, No 54, Flesh, No 68, Papillon, No 73 and Status Pub at no.38. Move off Avda slightly and check out Isidoro on C/Alvaro de Bazan 2, Cafe Lorca on C/Federico Carcia Lorca 21. Gay discos you'll find along Avda also includin the Black Cat at no 75, Heaven in Placa Gomila and La Demence at no.36. For Saunas check out Hotel Aries and Spartacus at C/Santo Espiritu 8 B, tel: 971 725007

Palma Chillin'

For a more relaxed atmosphere check out the Ca'n Barbara area which lies just beyond Pacha, but before Club de Mar. Here you're getting a bit more stylish, with bars around the marina area. Things are more laid back.

Choose the Cafe Garito, open from 6pm-4am, Thurs, Sun, and 6pm-4.30am Fri-Sat. Surfer and hippie-chic hangout, and there are often some big name DJs here at weekends. It serves food from 8pm-1am. If you're a celebrity, or a wannabe you'll probably be heading for 113, open 9pm-3am Mon-thur and Sun, 9pm-4am Fir and Sat. Other bars over this way include Mosquito Coast and Placa Gomila which plays grunge music.

Palma Eating Out

Palma de Majorca has got to be one of the best Spanish cities for eating out in Mallorca - really. It's a pleasant surprise. What you've got basically is massive choice. Choose from simple delectible Tapas to top of the range stylish restaurants covering the whole international range from Indian to Chinese to Thai. The cafe clique in Palma de Majorca is top class, great people watching territory!!

Sip those hot chocolates and chomp on those tasty Majorca pastries, particularly the famous ensaimadas, amidst the artists and intellectuals - swoon. Like the Palma nightlife, you can split the eating out scenario in Palma into thematic regions. Check out the Sa Llotja area, west of the Royal Palace for bars and pubs serving light snacks. Newer restaurants and local favourites are more centred around the old town and Santa Catalina. Passeig Maritim has a few good restaurants alongside the harbour as well.
