Ibiza Tourism Guide - Ibiza Festivals

Ibiza festivals are numerous. There are a choice range of festivals in Ibiza held every year. Hopefully you'll conincide with one during your visit to the island - guaranteed colour and kitsch!

Ibiza Festival Choice

The Medieval Festival, Ibiza takes place in the second weekend of May, in Dalt Vila, which evolves into a medieval market with prancing peddlers, noblemen, fakirs, snake charmers and minstrels. This festival comes out of Eivissa City Council really, and is there to commemorate the Dalt Vila World Heritage Site. It's a big flag, banner and marching affair, celbrating the settlement of Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs who've all had their moment of reign in the city. There's lots of acting and street shows, fire blowing, concerts and folklore events, offering an opportunity to learn more about the history of Eivissa.

The Night of Sant Joan on the 23rd June every year is popular across the whole of the Balearics, and is notable for it's bonfires, and in Ibiza it's acommpanying macaroni which is much sweeter than the English version. Dancing, eating and general merriment involving usually alcohol!

Hey up, for outrageous traditions if you happen to be on Ibiza on 16th July then check out the Festival of the Virgin of Carmen, patron saint of seaman. Join the big open air mass, and marvel as the Virgin of Carmen is hauled onto a fishing boat which potters out to sea, then they throw a laurel wreath and return. The procession then marches on with Virgin of Carmen in tow upto the Church of St Elm, greeted by a traditional 'hail Mary' when they arrive. Fantastic!

The big festival in Eivissa is the Earth Festival which takes place in the first two weeks of August every year. This one has firework displays, a Santa Maria concert, a gold medal of Eivissa is awarded, there's a big mass on 6th August in honour of sea farers, and there are various rock concerts, other concerts and lots of things for kids going on. All the festivals, as you'd expect in Spanish islands, lay on special entertainment for children. There's the Eivissa urban mile race as well during the Earth Festival if you fancy entering?!

Ibiza Festivals, there's more

Various district Ibiza festivals, slightly smaller affairs but no less an attraction, take place throughout the year in specific areas of Eivissa such as Dalt Vila, Can Escandell, Ses Figueretes, Platja d´en Bossa, Cas Serres and Sa Capelleta. Sant Pere, bless his cotton, is commemorated in Dalt Vila on 29th June every year and there's a big mass in the church of Santo Domingo. When the mass is over you can go shop til ya drop at the craft market in Placa de Sa Carrossa. Sample some traditional Eivissa cuisine, and dodge the traditional folk dancers. Another June festival is Can Escandell and on 10th July check out Sa Capelleta celebration of Sant Cristofol. Platja d´en Bossa and Ses Figueretes have little festivals in August, and the district of Cas Serres in September. Well worth a look, and hooking into.
