Formentera beaches, you've arrived at earthly paradise. Beaches around Formentera Island have their own character but all have turquoise waters and are unspoilt by development. Fantastic news for beach lovers, and there's plenty of low key watersports as well along the lines of snorkling. In the north the flavour is influenced by the salt marshes, now nature reserves.
To the south Platja de Migjorn is the most well known, and the longest practically stretching from Cap de Barbaria to La Mola.
Formentera's Illetes beaches, including Platja de ses Illetes, are at the furthest north part of Formentera Island, near Espalmador Island. As you'd expect, with Platja de ses Illetes being the closest beach to arrival port La Savina, these beaches get the highest number of visitors to the island. Illetes is easily reached with any form of transport, but why not get there by foot and do your bit for eco-tourism, or hire a bicycle at La Savina when you arrive.
Illetes is particularly well served for watersports, and there's lots on offer including sailing, water skiing and other fun water frolics. There's also a small restaurant, plenty of deck chairs, and sunshades. Everything you'll need for a perfect paradise beach experience. You could also hop on a boat from Illetes upto the island of Espalmador.
Platja Migjorn is one of the biggest beaches on Formentera, and the sand practically extends across the whole south of Formentera Island from promentary to promentary, Cap de Barbaria to La Mola. You'll get great views of these high points on Formentera from Platja Migjorn. If you're looking for a very quiet idyllic beach then this is for you, as it gets much fewer visitors compared to Illetes. You're not completely out in the wilderness though, and you'll find a small number of restaurants and kiosks at the water's edge.
Formentera has a few idyllic offshore islets. The most popular is Espalmador just north of the Natural Park of Ses Salines. You can get to Espalmador by boat or if you're brave and a competent swimmer you can swim it (eek) when the tide is low. The most popular and well known beach on Espalmador is Platja de S'Alga.
Check out the vigilance tower Torre de Sa Guardiola which is the highest point on Espalmador. The whole of this Formentera island is a designated nature reserve, with an abundance of flora, fauna and birdlife. Make sure you bring a packed lunch and supplies when you come, as you'll find no restaurants or businesses here. Espalmador is a no go area for businesses of any sort!
Formentera has it's share of lovely little cove beaches, and a good example is Cala Sahona on the western side of Formentera island, which is only about 200 metres long. It's a beautiful beach this one, with a few restaurants and kiosks, so you're not completely cut off.
Up on the top strip of Formentera, on the east side and sister to Illetes beach is lurvley Llevant beach. Llevant is a superbly large beach, and it's close to Illetes. Llevant is large enough to find yourself a quiet spot and it's proximity to Illetes means you can swap between the two on foot!
