Balearic Islands Tourism Guide - Majorca Trips

Majorca has many famous faces to promote it. Perhaps the most well know is Joan Miro who died in Majorca on 25 Dec 1983. He was born here, and his art is everywhere, both as public art and enormous sculptures and colourful murals around Palma de Mallorca, and in all the top contemporary art galleries, found particularly in Palma de Mallorca. Miro was rather partial to the Siurells, the clay whistles in white, green and red that you'll see dotted about in shops all over Mallorca. Buy these in Majorca resorts, they're cheaper than when they're sold in art galleries and museums!

There's been a few expats as well settling in Majorca, and a few famous visitors too. The list includes Robert Greaves, and what better place to escape from a mad world than Deia, Frederic Chopin and George Sand had a memorable winter visit to first Palma, then Valldemossa, Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglass are trying to make a fast buck near Valldemossa with their dubious cultural centre Costa Nord, oh and Claudia Schiffer has got some villa somewhere. Who cares I hear you cry. Well, that's a flavour of some of the more contemporary goings on around Majorca. Dig a little deeper and further back and you'll discover a history of invasion and settlement, including Romans, Moors, Christians and the odd romanticised pirate or two. There's a few Fathers, most notably Father Junipero Serra, missionary traveller who landed and was the first to settle along the west coast of America. Serra was born in Petra. "Christopher Columbus", there's a jammed packed history to Majorca. Christopher Columbus was born here in Majorca in Felanitx!

Majorca Baths, Culture, History, Art

Palma de Mallorca, Majorca's capital is a veritable hub of cultural and historical activity. Crammed with museums, royal palaces, a striking gothic cathedral with a bit of handywork by Gaudi inside, two superb contemporary art galleries, specialist shops galore, great squares lined with cafes, theatres, parks, a superb port front promenade for strolling along and fascinating architecture everywhere you look. Palma is certainly a good place to start your cultural journey of Majorca, with the Arab Majorca Baths being particularly popular and one of the few remaining Arab structures left after the Christian invasion.

Move on around the island of Majorca for your cathedral and monastery tour. Majorca is certainly not short on monasteries or the odd sanctuary. There's lots of crosses on hills, closer to god and all that stuff. They're all very striking, particularly the mega cross on the top of Sant Salvador inland from Porto Colom. The view up here is supposed to have inspired Christopher Columbus to exploration. You can see why when you're up there. Watch those hairpin bends on the way up!
